Fairway

The Fairway name still has magic (as well as love and pastries). Check out the link about a proposal at the Stamford Fairway.

Kilroy Caught Pink Handed

2 wild and crazy tourists at the Cadillac Ranch.
Apparently some wealthy Texas guy has a huge ranch (they're all huge there)& he stuck these old Cadillacs in the ground. People just come by there & spray paint graffitti on them.

We made it to Flagstaff AZ, BH.

Chanukah brunch

I had a couple of friends over for a chanukah brunch. I bougth a plastic disposable chanukah tablecloth , plates, napkins and cups served bialys and cream cheese and lox and an omelet. I made muffins this morning and served coffee. It was very pleasant. I also gave my guests a pair of fuzzy socks wrapped in a chanukah bag. I had chanukah music playing inthe background. It was a fairly last minute get together.

I won!!!

I was the day 3 winner of $250 chanakah gelt from Seasons. I now have a $250 account there. Check out Seasons' facebook page.

The store is expensive but the staff are very customer friendly. I was there the first night to pick up a couple of things. For some reason I was determined to shop there basically to pick up a jelly donut. I had trouble parking and went around a couple of times and then found a spot in their lot. When I was checking out something rang up for $16. The brisket I boutght was $16.01 and my bill seemed awfully high. I questioned and the girl lifted the bag with tthe 2 little jelly popems I bought. It should have $1.00. We laughed and a manger joked about how special they are and I said yeah it must have beenexpensive imported jelly... They adjusted it and then another manager said just take it off the bill so I ended getting it for free. I then asked for a form for the sweepstakes put it in the box and went home. Yeah I dripped the jelly on my shirt too. Today in shul a couple of friends told me I won and that they saw it on the facebook page...

Yossi and Malka Chanukah Production

Hi All!
Here are the videos of Yossi and Malka's Chanukah production . Malkas class went twice because the first time they sung too softly. Yossi is the boy on the far righton the last video. It is a little hard to tell because of the glare. I was really prepared this time. I erased tons of pictures to make sure I had enough memory, brought spare batteries, and had my phone ready to record in case the camera failed. Enjoy!

Enjoy the scenic view of Phoenix, maybe it will make you come visit!

Terms of Endeerment

As many of you have heard we had a little incident on our trip to Jackson MS. It's not as loopy as Yaakov's story nor were we as clueless as a deer in headlights.
As you know we drove down there after Shabbos. First we dropped off Steve Katz at his nephew’s house in Madison, a little north of Jackson. Then right after that as Ima & I were headed to the hotel, on a pretty quiet road, (Gluckstadt Rd.) all of a sudden a heard & felt a huge thud & saw that the windshield was cracked all over. We just kept goingas we realized it was a deer that must have hit us. I sort of saw an antler & an eyeball to my left. I looked in my side mirror but realized it was no longer there. We got to our hotel around 15 minutes later & saw that the drivers side door, sliding door & the panel over the front tire was damaged, beside the mirror being gone & the windshield cracked all over. Howard went by there to get the mirror. He said the mirror was smashed & there was blood everywhere.
Today we saw that part of the inside panel of the sliding door was knocked out. This morning I spent a lot of time on the phone with the insurance company. Our hotel was right next to a bunch of body shops but they were all closed. All the glass places were closed also. I still would have left the van in Jackson but the rental car places except by the airport were closed also.
In the end, Howard Katz said he would drive it back to Memphis for me. Well if he could then I could & that’s what we did. It drove perfectly fine. Steve Katz wasn’t comfortable with that so he took the train back to Memphis.
So we’ll see what the adjuster decides. There’s a chance they may total the car out. If it works out that I could get it fixed then hopefully it will be similar to how it was with the Saturn but it's a little different this time. We'll see.
But Hashem is good. It could have been a lot worse. I now understand why, in Tefilas Haderech, which we did say, in the 21st century we still make reference to”Chayos Ra’os”.

Here are some pictures of the damage

The Loop, Part 2

So there I am, like a doofus, back at the station where I had come from. I figure that my best option by this point is to get another green line train an make sure that I don't get off too early this time. So I take out my unlimited student transit pass to get through the turnstile, but it doesn't work! Apparently, it can't be used twice within a twenty minute period and I had just used it to get into the same station. Luckily, there was a CTA worker standing nearby. I think she recognized me from the first time I was there because I had asked her if all the trains were back to normal. I quickly explained the situation and she let me in using her card. A minute later, a green line train stopped. It was the first one since the one I had boarded before. I got off after two stops. Another minute later a pink line train stopped there. It was going the right direction. So I took it and I got to school at 9:01, one minute late. But I noticed that the test was not starting. I found out that the teacher knew about the situation with the trains and had delayed the test 15 minutes to give people like me time to get there. So I could have just stayed on my original route and been been fine. Anyway, I got an A on the test, But on the way back from school, my train got hit by a deer.
If anyone wants to see a map of the Chicago train system, click on the title of this post. Pay special attention to the Loop map in the bottom left corner, and keep in mind that I can't really tell the difference between the green and orange lines on the map. I'm just kidding about the deer. That's a different story.

The Loop

So I had my last final today, and I was on track to get there at least half an hour early. All of a sudden the train stops and they announce that there is a technical problem and all trains are not moving. After about 15 minutes, we are able to go two more stops, but they said they still don't know when it could go any further. Luckily, I was able to transfer to the red line, which was moving. Now here is where it gets confusing:I knew that I would not be able to transfer to the pink line which takes me to school unless I took one in the opposite direction around the loop, which would be like 7 extra stops and make me late. So I had to take a green line (which goes in both directions) and then I would be able to get the pink line in the right direction. But I got off one stop too early and the pink line was still going in the wrong direction! (I only realized this after waiting a few minutes). I thought to myself that the next stop is only a few blocks away and around the corner. So ran and got to the next stop before any trains had even passed. But when I got there, I realized that it was the station I just came from!
Its getting close to shabbos now so tune in next week for the rest of this confusing and hilarious story.

Loans Without Profit Help Relieve Economic Pain

We had a similar experience as people would come to our house to meet with our father as he ran a gemach as well. They would meet down in the basement.

Article in the NY Times
New York - When Hirshy Minkowicz was growing up in a Hasidic enclave of Brooklyn 30 years ago, he often noticed visitors arriving after dinner to meet with his father. They would withdraw into the study, speak for a time, then part with some confidential agreement having been sealed.

Trader Joes

My newest Trader Joes purchase is their Whole Wheat tortillas. It is high in fiber, has protein and no cholesterol. Only 45 calories. I fill it with cream cheese and trader Joes lox, an omelette, peanut butter etc. I roll it up and have a great breakfast to go. They are smaller than a wrap size so it is good for the kids lunches. Ibought veggie franks so I might try that as a filling.
They are pareve under the star K. Comes 10 in a reclosable package.

hoax

I received a fax at work from a lawyer in Spain claiminghe is representative of someone named Linda Samberg who died leaving millions of dollars. Ans since he searched and needs 1 heir to help claim this money before it is unclaimed. I could help claim it being her only heir. I don't have to send any money but the lawyer will get about 60% of the millions. I didn't know there were too many jews left in Spain. I think I will throw out the fax without any regrets.

First Days in Memphis

Last minute, we decided to drive down to Memphis for 1st days. We quickly got the volvo repaired from all its small kinks, and left Tuesday eveningish. Scott drove mostly through the night and we stopped in Nashville for Shachris, than made it to Memphis Erev Yomtov at like 2ish.
Esti, was standing on a ladder hanging up decorations, Imma had everything cooked and ready- I hardly stepped a foot in the kitchen, Abba had the Succah finished, and the backyard cleared out, and Grandpa had completed every crossword puzzle in the Commercial Appeal! Yom tov was the typical nice and relaxing Memphis chag. All our company was interesting and we even were extra machbid and ate in the succah on the 1st night even though it was wet and rainy. My entire high school class was in Memphis so we had a Shabbos meal together with everyone. It was really nice to catch up with everyone. Their is one other husband, so Scott had a friend too. We left motzai Shabbos and stopped for a few minutes in Roanoke, VA and walked around downtown. Again, Scott drove through the night and I just took a few hours.
It was a great trip, and always amazing to be home.

Dad

Today is daddy's 24th yahrzeit. Time does fly. I still have vivid memories of that year especially that Yom Kippur. Both mom and I were sick and I still remember Dad's sad look on his face seeing us both. (I had a tooth infection). Of course Succoth was bittersweet that year also. This year I felt sadder than usual and eventhough the weather was fairly warm and the rainheald out most of the time, Ikept onrembering our succah and Aunt Hilda's succah sweaters and Aunt Hilda and Uncle Benny coming to eat in our succah. I guess it didn't help that htere was a mix up withmy first meal. They thought hey invited me for Friday night and went out for the first night. I remeber bier=ng invited for the first night. So ther I was, without a succa and without a meal. I ended up going to my Friday night host but they weren't there either. I then knocked on my friend Miriam's door as Iwas going there the next night and they hosted me. They didn't have any company that night. I had to make my own kiddush and motzi. I am going to the cemetery soon after I close the computer. Ihope you enjoyed Succos

Update

As Fran said the part was beautiful!
As for me, I'm feeling great. My scan was clear from

a few weeks, and all the blood work I did over the l
ast few weeks are all coming back great. My GP and Oncologist are very happy.
Late breaking news: My hair, especially beard is growing in dark!!
On Rosh Hash
anah, I used Grandma's Machzor. This is what fell out in the middle of Musaf. Memories. I remember Mommy complaining about the door banging everytime but never wanting to change. Look at the price for a seat in 1978-my Bar Mitzvah year.

The celebration

For those who weren't there, Aunt Helen's 90th birthday celebration was beautiful. She was very touched by everyone showing up at Dougie's and surprising her. It was fun back at her house where the kids were fascinated with her antiques. I think they were even more facinated with Uncle Nat's new car and Shayna's Ipad. When we finally got back to Queens, after sitting on the Belt and Van Wycke, Loren, Shayna and I went to the Main Street Shuk to buy a lulav and etrog. They bought their first to take back home. We got sets for $25 down from $30.
It was really nice to have the cousins together talking about our memories of the store. We have to do this again Happy Succos everyone

She also plays the piano and performs at a synagogue senior center on Fridays. I guess she had to take on the extra job because of the stock market. LOL! May we all live a ahppy and healthy life and learn from her.

Phoenix

Hi (I don't have to write it's Esti, Because I have my own profile now.) Anyways, we're in Phoenix now. Everyone is adorable and the house is very nice. On Friday we watched Chana and Dena at home, (Yossi and Malka were at school.) Shabbos we went to shoul and I met some new friends. Sunday was a very big day, first, we went to the Railroad park where there are trains for people to ride on, a carousel, and a beautiful sandy playground with sprinklers. Then, after that we went swimming and aba taught Yossi and Malka how to "swim". Then that night we went to dinner at the Pepper's. (A family in Phoenix.) And finally, on Monday after the kids came home from school we went to the duck pond for a minute until the kids got scared out of their minds, and I think we might go swimming but i'm not sure. Anyways, tonight we are heading back so for the rest of the day I think we are just going to be packing and cleaning.

Mitzvah

I just want to let you know what happened. On Friday afternoon I found a license plate on my corner. I took it and posted it on KGH shuls. Nobody claimed it but Sunday afternoon so I went tothe police precinct and asked to run the plate. They told me the last name and neighborhood. I looked up the person (from Lawrence) and called. The persons' son lives in KGH and the wife lost it Thursday night. He picked it up this morning saving him hours at the DMV and money. feels good.

update

HI GUYS!!!!!!!

I just spent my last 2 months in training, cause you always have to do chazara. It was a bit different then when i went through basic training and advanced training. This was kinda more of the real thing. Anyways these last 2 weeks which extremely hard and draining and tiring, and my body is just dead. The first of the 2 weeks, is called Tarpal, which stands for Targil Pluga, meaning Platoon drill. Our platoon is about 60-70 guys divided into 3 groups (machlaka would be the word in hebrew). It was from Sunday to Thursday of living in the wilderness with basically no sleep and only eating tuna and on occasion watermelon. Every night we did a bit of hiking with our heavy equipment and then we did a drill in morning and drill at night, during the day it's too hot to train so didn't do anything, but it's also impossible to sleep b/c the sun is literally on top of you and your body is filled with sweat and when you lie down all the leaves and grass and everything sticks to your arms and finding shade wasn't easy. For shabbos we were off and I went to Uncle Mordechai and Aunt Tzipporah which was nice cause it really gave me a recharge for the next week, which they call Shavua Milchama, also called Targad, standing for Targil of the G'dud, our G'dud which is called Nachshon consists of about 250 soldiers divided into 3 groups, 1.Palchod (that's where i am and they're the best) 2. Masayyat 3. Mivtzait... the difference between the 3 is their jobs during War. This week started on Tuesday till Thursday much shorter but much harder cause it's 2 days of actual war conditions (that's why they call it shavua milchama). The first night we literally were hiking all night long for hours and hours with our equipment and then daylight when we arrived we did this 2 hour drill on mountainS I was so so so tired and had trouble giving it my all, the day was more relaxing we were giving some tuna and a lot of cold water and then Wed night we started the hike again which was shorter and easier than first night and then Thurday morning we did a drill taking over a village which we did take over but a lot of people got injured (not for real). Then it wsas over 2 months of training and we had a nice lil TEKes Kravi with good food and tonight I had a wedding of someone in my unit, i think he's a bit crazy for getting married while he's in army but he is a tzaddik. Anyways next week we have a week of being in a nice hotel specially for soldiers on the beach since we just had an insanely hard 2 months and then after that, we go to Gush Etzion to guard the area. There was a bit of Baal Hagan but baruch hashem it all worked out. They had told us that our week of hotel and swimming pool is cancelled and instead of Gush Etzion we are going to some base near Eilat for the next few months and e/o was so upset cause Etzion is one of the more fun places to be in. But baruch Hashem we are not going down there.

In Honor of Yaakov Starting School

The Pharmacist’s Monday Morning:

Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife.
Tearfully she explained, "It's the Pharmacist. He insulted me terribly
this morning on the phone. I had to call multiple times before he would
even answer the phone."

Immediately, the husband drove downtown to confront the Pharmacist and
demand an apology.

Before he could say more than a word or two, the Pharmacist told him,
"Now, just a minute Sir, listen to my
side of it. This morning the alarm failed to go off, so I was late
getting up. I went without breakfast and
hurried out to the car, only to realize that I'd locked the house with
both house and car keys inside and had
to break a window to get my keys. Then, driving a little too fast, I
got a speeding ticket. Later, when I
was about three blocks from the store, I had a flat tire."

"When I finally got to the store, a bunch of people were waiting for me
to open up. I got the store opened
and started waiting on these people, all the time the darn phone was
ringing off the hook."

He continued, "Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the cash
register drawer to make change, and
they spilled all over the floor. I had to get down on my hands and knees
to pick up the nickels and the phone
was still ringing. When I came up, I cracked my head on the open cash
drawer, which made me stagger back
against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on it and half of
them hit the floor and broke."

Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing with no let up. I finally got back
to answer it. It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a Rectal
thermometer.

Believe me mister, as God is my witness, all I did was tell her.

Happy Birthday Miriam!!

New York is preparing (scaring) us for the hurricane. They are talking about shutting down the
subway Saturday afternoon til Monday. Evacuating Coney Island Hospital too. I have a working flashlight, charged phone, food, a book and a battery powered radio. I am not in a hurricane flood zone so I am set. If mom and dad could get married in a hurricane, then I am not going to worry.

My Childhood Choir Director, of blessed memory

I recently heard that Teddy Silbermintz, Choir Director at my elementary school who recruited me to be in his High Holiday shul choir, passed away recently. First I heard it from Fran & then yesterday I received an email out of the blue from his daughter, Sandra Silbermintz.

I really haven't spoken to the man since 1975. I don't think we've had any contact since I left his choir in 9th grade, but the more I think about it, the more I realize the impact he had on me & what turned out to be my career.

I sang in his High Holiday choir for 5 years. For 5 years from 5th grade thru 9th grade I left my family for Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur. For 2 years we sang in East Flatbush in Rabbi JJ Hecht's shul. I believe I stayed in the shul one year & one year with Tillie & Lou Fisch who lived in that neighborhood. Then for 3 years we sang at the Brighton Beach Jewish Center which coincidentally was where my parents got married. The Chazan there was & amazingly still is, Herzl Pineles, whom I have recently been in touch with thru the CCA Conventions. It was he that I first saw walk down the aisle while singing "Hinneni".

I think I used to get paid $75 & then when I became a soloist, maybe $100. Back then Selichos night the shul would be packed & it would take a good 2 & a half hrs. The ladies still used to cry during davening.

I guess I was a bridge connecting the tail end of the previous generation of old-timers to the current generation where so much has changed.

I wish I was in contact with the other kids in the choir. I often search on Facebook for those few names that I remember, but haven't stumbled on anyone yet.

Nothing humorous or cute here, but I just wanted to put this down in writing somewhere & share this with the family.

Hope all you Yankees survived the Great Earthquake of 2011. I just had this vision of Meir about to miss the winning putt when the earthquake hit causing the ball to double back & sink that "eagle".

Click here to read email exchange with Sandra Silbermintz.

earthquake

I hear there was an earthquake. I think I was outside saying good bye tothe clients when a couple of trucks rummbled down the street. I came inside and heard there was an earthquake. People at work who were sitting down felt it. Aunt Helen felt it but thought she was dizzy.
Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, dust storms, thunder storms with baseball size hail. Crazy weather we are having this year

Wabbit Season

They wouldn't let me shecht my own duck at the live poultry market I went to. Something about city ordinances blah blah. I am very upset. Now I am trying to find another market that is not so anti-Semitic.

Duck Season

After two years of being a shochet, I am finally going to shecht a duck tomorrow (if all goes as planned).
I will let you know how it goes.
Anyone have any good recipes?

Greetings from Arizona!

Hi everyone! Hope all is well. Just wanted to keep you updated with our life. B'h we are settling in nicely and the kids have made some friends. I started work last week and work 3 days a week . Yisroel just started inservice and school starts for the kids and him on August 23. We are meeting people and getting a lot of invites for shabbos which is nice. We live about a 7 minute walk from the shul, which isn't so bad. The average temperature these days is 110 degrees (but its a dry heat!) and we are staying cool in the pool. The kids are making progress putting their head in the water, but not actually swimming. Chana is walking everywhere, babbling, and has 2 teeth (finally!). We are unpacked and just got dining room chairs and a kitchen table (on craigs list) and maybe once we hang up our pictures, we will take some pics of the house to show you. This picture is taken by the neighbors yard. Our yard doesn't have any cactus (or grass) and the front area is basically just rocks. Another big adjustment is that the tap water does not taste good at all so we have to only use bottled water and refill gallon bottles of water at the store. Can't wait to see you all in person- the weather is supposed to get nice here really soon! We miss you!

Four Eyes

Since I (Mindy) got glasses when I was two, we decided to take Akiva to get his eyes checked. Sure enough, before he was a year, he already needed glasses. We took him to two different eye doctors who both said he needed glasses for nearsightedness. This is what we got him for his 15 month birthday:
Sometimes, he'll actually keep them on, so we're pretty sure they're working!

Tiger Meir

Meir's golf camp had a color war event today. It went into sudden death. Meir hit the put the forced the sudden death. In the sudden death Meir hit the winning putt. Here is the link for the video winning putt. Skip to the 6:30 minute of the video. We are taking sponsors for Meir's budding career.

ryan gold

hi:

To celebrate Chaiim's (Ryan) entry into Samberghood, Helene and I will mark it this shabbos with some Rhein (Ryan) gold beer. I know this may bring into question my fealty to the Yankees since Rheingold was the official Mets beer.

Mazel Tov, Good Shabbos, and if you know the lyrics to the commercial, don't be afraid to sing them.

Yet another Samberg-Levson relation

Hasogas Gvul??

This is my first time posting, the impetus of which is some pretty neat news. I recently realized that my maternal grandfather, and great-grandfather, Harold and Joseph Ravitz, respectively, owned a broom store on 134 Ludlow street, a mere block away from the Samberg/Fisch shop at 178. In the posted picture, my grandfather and grandmother Harold and Lillian Ravitz are pictured in front of their store. Anyone recognize it? Maybe the two were commercial nemeses but vowed that one day their descendants would get married.
